Fun Homeschooling?
Yes, You Can Do It!

"But Mom, it just isn't fun!" Does this sound familiar to you?

If you are teaching your children at home, you've probably heard these words or something similar, and you've probably wondered, "Is it possible to accomplish fun homeschooling?"

Like we all know, a lot of life is very normal and not very fun, but there are lots of little ways to bring excitement and life to your homeschooling.

I'm still trying so much to learn this that, really, I feel like I'm writing this article to myself! I am with you in the journey of learning how to be the mom, teacher, and wife God wants me to be.

messy little boy So much is caught by our children about how we view life and how we respond to the situations that God allows to come to us each day.

If I get grumpy and frustrated when school is interrupted, fun homeschooling flies out the window!

But, if I allow the Lord to shape my attitudes into ones of joy and thanksgiving, even the interruptions can become fun little (or big) times of learning.

Having an agenda and schedule is good and necessary, but keep in mind that it must be balanced with the art of flexibility.

To insist on my plan as the only way to go may be missing some of the greatest blessings God has for our family that day.

Variety is the Spice of Life

Our children love variety and sometimes just a simple thing like an oral spelling test instead of a written one or working math problems on the marker board brings more sparkle to their eyes.

Shake things up!

Do things in a different order sometimes. Let them choose between a few different options for a certain subject.

If you need to run an errand during school and need to take the children with you, make your time on the road productive and fun with some of these ideas.

  • Memorizing verses or poems.
  • Singing.
  • Watch for something that you're studying about as you drive.
  • Have your kids take their books along to work on or read if appropriate.
  • Have an older child help a younger one with her school work.
  • Stop at a park or hiking trail while you're out anyway. The children will love it and you'll get some fresh air, too!

Surprise your children with a note of encouragement, the offer of an incentive for a job well done, or just a hug and sincere complement for their hard work. I love being encouraged and I'm sure my children do too!

No, not all of school is fun, and there is much satisfaction in learning to persevere, but let's do what we can to make fun homeschooling become a normal thing in our homes!
